What does Back to the Future and this week's football print have in common? The very first moment we see Marvin Berry and the Starlighters on screen at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance, the band is playing "Night Train" - the very song that this week's subject was named after --so named for his affinity for that song.
Here's the write-up on the print that helps set the tone of the piece and tell the story:
"The Quarterback throws you the ball, and a swarm of defenders are closing in from every direction -- then you spot it -- a clear lane, almost like a tunnel, amidst the tumbling bodies. You make your move but suddenly realize your mistake: The Lane you thought you spotted was Dick Lane, and at the end of the tunnel you entered came barreling Night Train."
This print was such a blast to do - I loved learning more about this absolute MONSTER of a competitor. The quotes from and about Dick Night Train Lane are legendary and just plain unbelievable. Fierce doesn't even come close to describing it. You know he's something else when the NFL made SEVERAL rules around just how effective of a defender he was. The MLB lowered the mound because of Bob Gibson, and the NFL changed tackling rules because of Dick Lane.
It was a joy to work with Night Train's son on this project and hear more about what the family is working on to keep the legacy of this unforgettable player living on for ages to come!
